World Cup Wednesday 2018

It wasn’t my average Wednesday.  I started the morning waking up earlier than usual to meet friends at a restaurant to watch Mexico play Sweden at 7:00 a.m. (my time). I was instructed to arrive at 6:30 a.m. to secure in spot in line. I arrived to a handful of half-asleep fans decorating the outside of the restaurant. One fan was trying to catch a few more ZZZs as he lied on the low garden wall, some happily chatted in groups as some minded their own business entranced by thier cell phones.

I didn’t see anyone wearing any Sweden jerseys but there were plenty of Mexico jerseys. There I was, a few inches shorter than usual and extremely dressed down for a workday. I donned jeans, Chuck Taylor’s and a rose-colored tank top. The mercury was already climbing most likely above 80 degrees even at this early hour. A local news crew showed up prior to the restaurant opening. They made their way through the sport fans ringing loud bells, clashing thunder sticks and wearing Mexican flags as capes as everyone eagerly waitied to get inside to watch the game.

This was unlike any Wednesday morning I had ever experienced. At exactly 7 o’clock I heard someone shouting my name. It was my cue that it was time to go inside. Everyone ushured in to secure seats to park thier bodies (sort of) for the next couple of hours. As anthems were sung, orders for mimosas and bloody marys were made.

One of our friends even ordered a bloody Rita! I said “Moe, what’s a bloody Rita?!” he said “I don’t know. I just said yes”. The waitress didn’t hear him properly and so he just went with it.  In case you didnt know what it was either, it’s a blood Mary with tequila instead of vodka.

The cheers continued, arms flailed, shouts and bells rang throughout. Towards the end of the match half of the televisions switched to the South Korea and Germany game. With the change of the tvs came the change of cheers. Focus was shifted to the other game. The patrons cheered on South Korea and it worked!

This has been a long day. A good day and one to remember.

  1. I think Sweden won though Mexico still qualify.
Our mob didn’t deserve to be there. Soccer Australia has failed to capitalize on the last 6 years in this country which was the plumb opportunity any sporting administration could only dream of. I am just the poor bastard on a disability pension trying to buy a coffee in their businesses each morning. Not our fault if blind Freddie can see how loose their game is. They shirt lift and do some sickly De Niro act taking $4 off us daily…. go figure.
Have always liked Mexican boxers and baseball players though. People here would make out like they do if you waved money at them.

    1. Yes, Sweden won and since Germany lost it allowed Mexico to not be eliminated that’s why everyone was rooting for South Korea to win. Long winded explanation, sorry. 😐

How is everything with you? How’s the cat?
